Event Summary

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) invites you to participate in the stakeholder meeting “Addressing the rise of syphilis in the Americas” on 16-17 November 2021, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM (EST).

Please see additional details below.

Background

The countries of the Americas are experiencing a rise in the number of syphilis cases and outbreaks, with the subsequent increase in congenital syphilis cases.

In 2020, the Region of the Americas had an estimated 2.5 million new cases of syphilis among adolescents and adults aged 15–49 years in 2020. The reported percent of pregnant women with syphilis in countries in the Americas ranges between 0% and 4.6%. These levels seem to increase, with more than half of countries reporting higher rates in 2019/2020 than in 2018. The COVID-19 pandemic affected access to health services and reduced the availability of resources to prevent and control other diseases, such as syphilis.

In the current context, PAHO is inviting stakeholders to review the situation of syphilis in the Region, share lessons learned from the syphilis response and discuss public health actions towards syphilis elimination in the Americas.
